An honest, plain-English account of how PickShelf decides which products to recommend, and what our recommendations are and are not based on.

What We Actually Do

PickShelf is a UK product-research site. For every guide, our category editors compare products across the things that genuinely decide a good buy: manufacturer specifications, the live Amazon UK and retailer listings, materials and build, capacity or power, price and availability, and the aggregated, verified customer reviews a product has earned over time. We read across hundreds of those owner reviews to find the patterns, both the recurring praise and the recurring complaints, that a single listing never tells you.

From that research we shortlist genuine contenders, filter out anything with consistent quality problems, misleading marketing or poor value, and explain exactly which type of buyer each remaining pick suits best.

What We Do Not Do

We want to be completely straight with you about this: we do not physically buy, unbox, or lab-test the products we write about. We do not run stopwatch battery tests, take a decibel meter to a blender, or sleep on the mattresses ourselves. Any site that claims to hands-on test hundreds of products across dozens of unrelated categories every year is stretching the truth, and we would rather not.

What we do instead is thorough, transparent desk research: cross-referencing published specifications against the live listing, checking the aggregated verified rating and review count, and weighing independent expert coverage where it exists. When we quote a rating or a review count, it comes straight from the product's real Amazon UK listing, not from us.

How a Pick Is Decided

  1. Survey the market. We gather the credible options in a category from manufacturer specs, live UK listings and independent coverage.
  2. Compare like for like. Every contender is lined up on the same criteria, specifications, materials and build, capacity or power, price and availability, so the comparison is fair.
  3. Read the reviews at scale. We analyse the aggregated verified customer reviews for each product, looking for the themes that repeat across many owners rather than any single opinion.
  4. Filter and rank. Products with consistent complaints, poor reliability or weak value are dropped. What remains is ranked by who it genuinely suits best.
  5. Keep it current. Prices move, stock changes and new models arrive, so we revisit guides and update picks and pricing as needed.

We are not sponsored by any brand, and inclusion in a guide can never be bought. PickShelf is a participant in the Amazon Associates Programme, so when you buy through a link on our site we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That commission never decides our picks. We would rather recommend a cheaper product that is genuinely better than an expensive one that pays us more, because the only thing that keeps a site like this useful is being right.
